Radiation Oncologist

Summary

A radiation oncologist is a physician who specializes in using radiation therapy to cure cancer or reduce the symptoms. Radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy or radiosurgery, is a treatment that involves using intense and highly-targeted photon beams to destroy cancer cells or placing small amounts of irradiated material into the tissue affected by cancer.

Radiation oncologists work in a team of radiation specialists consisting of radiation therapists and radiation oncology medical physicists to deliver the radiotherapy treatment. However, radiation oncologists have the responsibility to decide the method and most suitable level of radiation to deliver to a patient.
